Visual Vocabulary
Fixation point-maintaining of the visual gaze on a single location. Not to be confused with the Vanishing point. Effective use of elements/principles can help direct the viewer to various fixation points to establish stronger compositions. (hierarchy thinking :hero, sidekick, crowd)
Vanishing point-the point at which receding parallel lines viewed in perspective appear to converge.
Clock Angles-a clever way to communicate with others the position of orthogonal lines (lines that recede to vanishing points.
Orthogonal Lines: these lines are the lines that recede to the vanishing point(s)
Plane: surface is a flat surface, and any distinct flat surface within a painting or sculpture can be referred to as a plane.

Ideation Process & The Importance of a Sketch:
Ideation does not always being with words...Sometimes it's this visual and visceral "thing". It's being particularly aware of the space you're in and the space you are capturing...with the initial first step use of a sketchbook and your senses, not just your eyes, but also what you feel, hear, smell and taste (hope not!). OPEN your senses to the space, so your mind can really tune into your environment. If you don't wholeheartedly participate, you'll miss the "gems" of the space. "Quick Comp is a tool" ...The initial quick comp sketch is what "seek and find' is all about. It's the most important tool, because it's the first step of a long process. |
Seek and Find:
As a young artist, you're always collecting. You're collecting visual information. It might be color because you love color and have a fondness for it in expressing yourself in pigment. It may be texture, and you're heading into textile design...don't assume so quickly that you're limited into the one field and make the assumption that "perspective" has nothing to offer you. True, it may not always be your strength or a passion, but there's much to GAIN in your study of perspective. It's the completeness of the artist that makes you stronger in the thing you love most. Seek it and you'll Find more than you expected in the long run of things yet unseen.
Gesture:
You have to sometimes prepare to get into the mindset of being creative (especially with perspective), and that takes energy. You need that energy, as a potential energy to transform onto the page to kinetic energy...Sketching is always a kinetic process. This is almost always reliant on the gestural qualities of the beginning sketches. Some folks are super dynamic, others more concise...that really speaks more of your personal preferences...as long as it's always 100% honest effort, it will always be YOU.
