In conjunction with an exhibition hosted by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Illustrators Are Our Neighbors, at the Alpharetta Arts Center, Arts Alpharetta and the Alpharetta Library are hosting a book reading with renowned and beloved author, Carmen Agra Deedy, on Saturday, October 19 at 1 pm. Carmen is an award-winning author of sixteen books and the host of the four-time Emmy-winning children’s program, Love That Book! Deedy is also an accomplished lecturer, having been a guest speaker for the Library of Congress, Columbia University, TED, and TEDx Conference. Other titles include are The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!, Martina the Beautiful Cockroach, Rita and Ralph’s Rotten Day, and 14 Cows for America, a New York Times Bestseller. Her latest books are Wombat Said Come In, released in October 2022, Carina Felina, released in August 2023, and The Peanut Man, due to be released in March 2025. And Library Dragon celebrates its 30th anniversary. An editor, and lifelong advocate for libraries, she previously served on the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. Partnering with us in this special event is The Book Worm Bookstore, offering pre-purchasing of some of Carmen Deedy’s books to be delivered to the Alpharetta Library for her presentation, just in case you want her to sign your book!

2024 Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase Winners
At the Virtual Summer Conference, SCBWI members were invited to submit their strongest work to the Portfolio Showcase. Our industry judges chose four talented illustrators to honor with the Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards. All Portfolio Showcase winners will receive reviews by industry professionals and will have their art on display in the SCBWI Booth in the 2025 Bologna Children's Book Fair. The Gold Award (Grand Prize) winner will additionally receive free admission to the 2025 In-Person Winter Conference. From Cherry: "Hooray!! More about the O SHOW in NYC at the Society of Illustrators societyillustrators.org/event/oaexhibit/ Co-Assistant Regional Advisors Michelle Kennedy and Amanda Fletcher with assistance from member Sarah Musolino hosted a wonderful event for a Q&A Panel at the Gwinnett (Duluth) Library on August 24th with regional PAL members and some self published ones too.
